You have received a summons for jury duty, Now what?

Keep your summons handy.  You will need to bring it with you when you report for Jury Duty  

This has important information on it letting you know what date you are summoned to serve, and the phone number for our Jury line.  You will need to call that number, or click on the Jury Instructions tab the Friday before you are summoned to find out what time and where you need to report.

Food and drink.

There are snack and Coke machines on the third floor.  Water and coffee will also be available in the Jury deliberation room.  No food or drinks are allowed in the courtrooms.

Parking

Parking is available in the lot near the courthouse.  Spaces are limited, so you may want to arrive early.

Dress Code  If you are appearing for jury duty, you should dress nicely and in a manner that shows respect for the court.  Here are some things you should NOT wear:

  • Hats or other head coverings inside the courtroom (except those worn for religious or medical purposes)
  •  Sunglasses
  •  T-shirts depicting violence, sexual acts, profanity, or illegal drugs
  •  Tube or halter tops/plunging necklines/ bare midriffs 
  • Ripped or torn jeans • Miniskirts or shorts
  •  Baggy pants that fall below the waist
  •  Muscle shirts (usually worn as undergarments)
  •  Flip flops

Jury Pool

Jurors are randomly selected from a master jury list identifying all citizens.  This list is compiled from voter registration and driver's license records.

Qualifications:  Any citizen of Georgia is qualified to serve on a Jury if he or she:

  • Is a citizen of the United States of America;
  • Is 18 years of age or older;
  • Is a current resident of Harris County;
  • Is not a convicted felon, who has not had their voting rights restored.

 

Exemptions and Eligibility:  The laws of Georgia allow exemptions from jury service for the following reasons:

  • Persons 70 years of age or older that do not wish to serve.  
  • Not a resident of Harris County.
  • Persons that are disabled, either mentally or physically.
  • Persons that are full-time students at college, university, vocational school, or other post secondary school.
  • Any service member on ordered military duty and the spouse of any such service.

 

If you feel like you are not qualified, or you meet any of the exemption criteria, and you do not wish to serve, you can fill out an affidavit and submit that to our office no later than FIVE days before your service date.  Click here for the Jury Affidavit.  You will need to have your signature notarized on the form.    You can return this, and any supporting documentation in person,  by mail, or by email.  Please find this information on the second page of the affidavit.
